Inventing characters, understanding chroma and Leyendeckers process

Heyo!

I'm back from a little one week break from the newsletter so let's get stuck into my resources, thoughts, 'aha moments' and announcements from this past week.

---------------

- Resources

FB post - Tarzan Character Sheets

Tarzan was one of my favourite 2D animated movies growing up, I used to spend ages trying to draw the VHS cover/any other promotional material I could get my hands on.

And my 6 year old self would go nuts for these character sheets, same for my current 28 year old self!

Video - Understanding Textures

Rendering textures is a tricky thing to do, and often still trips me up.

But understanding that most textures are dictated by the interaction between the material and the light source allows me to tackle the problem logically.

This was a great interview between Bobby Chiu & Jonathan Hardesty as Jonathan's texture painting demo's play in the background.

Worth a listen.

Video - Oil Painting

A great video about Chelsea Langs experience at the Portrait Society of America's conference 2022.

Throughout this video she mentions things like...

  • Critiques
  • Being scrappy and figuring out painting opportunities
  • Enjoying the work of others
  • What kind of feedback is the most valuable to her

Basically her whole experience at the conference, but this was one of those auto-play recommendations that just happened to pop up and I was pleasantly surprised.

IG Post - Gurney on inventing characters

This was a beautiful post by James Gurney, and a really interesting insight into his process for inventing characters and placing them in a scene.

He actually had a little maquette of the character propped up infront of him a painting studio that he lit himself and managed to add that character + background of the studio into the painting.

His work is always worth a look.

Website - Leyendecker Process

I went down a brief Leyendecker rbbit hold this past week and while doing a little bit of digging, I came across this post on James Gurneys site that gave very vague outlines about Leyendecker's process.

Worth a quick read if you're a fan of Leyendecker's aesthetic.

Twitter Thread - Understanding Chroma

This is another fantastic twitter thread that I stumbled across by Devn Korwin.

This one outlines how to think about 'Chroma', what it is and how to use it to create interesting, creative and realistic colours in our paintings.

It get's a little technical, but I think that's more of a benefit than a draw back.

Personally I want to know 'why' things are the way they are, rather than just remembering a bunch of 'rules'.

Updates

I've begun filming the secret project last week which took up most of my free time and is why last weeks newsletter was pushed.

I'll be releasing more WIP's/clips on the lead up to the release.

Can't wait to get your feedback on it when it's released to the wild.

That's all from me for this week,

And as always, stay consistent, use reference, have fun with it and remember, it’s only pixels baybee.

Cheers, Ben
