Making your own art study tools, colour simplification and interviews with the greats

Hey hey!

We've got a bit of everything this week from 3D sculpting, interviews, live stream processes and comic book line-work. Let's not waste any more time and get stuck into my resources, thoughts, 'aha moments' and announcements from this past week.

Youtube Live Stream - Jens Claessens

I love this guys stuff, and we're lucky enough to check out his process on a recent live stream hosted by the Proko channel.

I love how there's not a clear definition between line and form, very interesting, a great watch.

Video - Simplification of colour (By Craig Mullins)

There's a whole series on Youtube by Bobby Chiu and Craig Mullins (the godfather of digital painting) where they talk about their course on schoolism, very much worth a listen, but this one in particular got my attention.

His overarching idea? "Color is not important"... Not something you'd expect from someone that makes magnificent pieces of digital art full of colour right?

I'll leave it at that cliff hanger as it's only a 3 minute video, but very eye opening. Highly HIGHLY recommend.

Video - Advice from a Master (Frank Frazetta)

What's more to say? The master himself sitting down for an interview? I'm in! And so should you. Worth throwing on in the background. I especially liked where he went into detail about how his 'muted' colours actually made him stand out in the industry.

Video - Comic book inking

I've been getting more and more interested in line-work recently, so when this one popped up on my YT recommended, I couldn't resist! It's a great little insight as to how DC and Marvel comic artist Ryan Benjamin approaches his inking. Filled with tips and tricks and goes for about 40 minutes.

Worth checking out if you're looking for some line-work inspiration.

Video - [Nomad Sculpt (Drug Free Dave)](

I've been interested in diving deeper into 3D sculpting for the purpose of better understanding 3D shapes more and really speeding up the learning process.

I literally downloaded and started to play around with Nomad Sculpt today after consistently being impressed with Dave Reed's (drugfreedave) work on instagram. It's absolutely amazing that this comes from an iPad app and I'm having a blast already!

Imagine if the old masters knew there was a tool like this to just create 3D sculpts from nothing, on a screen (first of all, they'd be asking "what's a screen") and second of all, they'd be in disbelief!

I'm a big believer in using any and all tools to achieve the skills you're looking to acquire, and if 2D art is a lot about understanding 3D forms, then there's no reason why I shouldn't invest some time to get proficient in 3D sculpting.

My first little project in Nomad will be a simplified/stylised head sculpt (think the Asaro head but stylised) that I can use to study or whip out any time I need to tackle a tricky head angle.

Keep an eye out on my IG stories/twitter for updates on how this goes!

That's all from me for this week,

And as always, stay consistent, use reference, have fun with it and remember, it’s only pixels baybee.

Cheers, Ben
